It was a tough dog eat dog world. The special effects in "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" were phenomenal - a full cinematic experience all around.

I think the actors are all fantastic and are well cast for their parts. I remember how sad I was to hear that Andy wouldn't be in Season 2 because he was totally Spartacus to me.

I tried to watch Season 2 with an open mind but it didn't feel the same anymore. I liked the prequel but it just wasn't as great without Andy and I never did continue with the series after Season 2 because I couldn't imagine a Spartacus without Andy.

Overall, I absolutely love this show and I still watch it whenever there isn't anything worth watching on the telly.

I would definitely recommend this Blu-ray version and give it a solid 5. This is the 3rd time I've watched this and it gets better with each viewing.

There are so many little intricate pieces to the puzzle that is Spartacus and you cannot truly absorb everything without seeing each episode more than once.

It is such a Roman Tragedy, encompassing the moral, ethical, and human traits that led to the downfall of Roman society. The class system, utilization of slaves for all manner of degrading acts, and the prideful antics of a chosen few are all the ingredients that make up the drama that is Spartacus.

The battle scenes on the sands of the arena are incredible, the battle scenes in the lutes' and the among the gladiators are even more incredible.

There is a lot of blood and guts but no worse than or Walking Dead at time. I loved it, it has something for everyone, and Andy Whitfield is or was Spartacus.

I'll concentrate mostly on the blu-ray disks than a movie review. As an amateur of Roman history, I'm aware that few movies capture real Rome, its usually sanitized.

However, Spartacus amplified it more, and focused on one man and his immediate surroundings. If you liked the series, the blu-ray is a must.

The colors are very vibrant, the contrast and sharpness superb, the facial details and skin tones are life like, you are there, for the most part, as part of the scene.

In some gory lacerations, the anatomic detail can be seen as accurate, and can be bothersome to those unused to it. Several episodes are longer or extended.

It doesn't add more to the spirit of the episodes but mostly prolonging visuals that are shorter on the broadcast version.

There are nicely done popups of Roman history and interesting commentary by the producers, directors, and actors, so you can watch each episode at least twice, first as a show and then as a 'making off' the show.

Cons [Minor] Ads Disk 1 is preceded by 10 minutes of advertising of upcoming movies, and they can't be bypassed on my BD player; you can speed play or jump to the next track, but you need to do this 4x before getting to the main menu.

Although they are great eye candy, they are irritating to see over and over again. The pop ups appear for a fixed time interval, whether they are short quips, or long footnotes.

You have to pause the frame to read the long footnotes and rewinding it to re-read it can be tiring. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

This season is as good as Gods of the Arena and both are monumental statues of great TV making. They continue to push the boundaries of violence and sex to the limit and never fail to make you less than exhilarated, eager to watch the next episode.

TV has nothing like it! Extremely graphic violence, graphic injuries, graphic sex, graphic nudity, graphic language. This series is justifiably loved by many and I am one but be warned that you know what you are letting yourself in for as there are many items such as dodgy cgi, extreme OTT violence and sexual scenes that could turn many off see the one star reviews for this - there are quite a few.

Get past these issues and suspend a modicum of disbelief and you have a thoroughly entertaining series on your hands - a visual feast in more ways than one, great action, characters and story.

The lead actor Andy Whitfield is extremely charismatic and owns the part with such sensitivity, humour and soul that even the great Kirk Douglas is given a run for his money.

Such is the actor's presence I am convinced Andy Whitfield would surely have gone on to be a star in the same way George Clooney gained popularity after being such a hit in his medical series but tragically he died soon after the filming of this first episode.

And a tragic loss it is. Though to be replaced in subsequent series by Liam McIntyre who does a fine job in the part of Spartacus the series was to lose some of its soul and the humour, like ability and fun of the Whitfield interpretation is lost.

The acting from John Hannah as the gladiator owner, Lucy Lawless as his wife, and actors who play Crixus and Onomaeus, Glaber , and wife, Varus - who makes a great double act with spartacus - etc.

The fighting sequences develop as the series goes on to become some of the best fight sequences out there - even though the blood soaking is akin to the director taking a can of red paint and dashing it all over the camera and is somewhat tongue in cheek.

It is all unashamedly OTT and is pure entertainment -but just as you think you shouldn't take it too seriously there are many aspects of the show that are quite accurate in the telling of the story more than one would think and surprising considering the liberties taken with the intermittent storylines The physiques of the gladiators and women characters all are beautiful make you want to train and get fit - and even when they get involved in the most intense battles and violent scenes still keep their good looks.

All ludicrous, I know, but at the same time it provides fascinating eye candy and combined with plot lines of devious intent, humour, tragedy , escapism and entertainment in manner akin to that of a Shaespeare Play And so Wow did they have a great time making it!

RIP Andy Whitfield. Great actor , much missed. No, not for the politics in the show, although there is some , but for the total amazing quality of production regarding story and acting.

There have been lots of shows about politics and the president but then The West Wing came along which allows you to clear out your collection and have it take pride of place.

Now the same has been done for Roman stories. Spartacus: Blood and Sand was amazing. Throw the others away. It is time that finally, someone does Roman times with pure class and "no holds barred".

But that is what makes it so good. People in yak on about the nudity etc but you have to look past it for what it is.

This was many years BC. In that time, it meant nothing! And the way it goes virtually unnoticed when the slave girls walk around nude adds to the realism.

We look at it with 21st century eyes. To them it meant nothing if a slave was killed as long as the cost could be met. It wasn't even "top of mind".

It is like throwing away an ipod now, or actually, a better description would be replacing a pet. Imagine if the 41st century looked at the way cats and dogs are treated today being in pounds and sold in shops and thought that shocking.

To us, it seems normal. As it did to trade in slaves back then. That is where this gets things right. Oh it is wrong and it is awful, but it is a show about many years BC, and not the present.

That is what the negative reviewers will never understand. The CGI - good in places and bad in others.

Who cares. Did anyone watch Start Trek with the paper mashee rocks on the planets in Kirk's time and care? We watched it for the story.

As you should this. And understand, this is pretty good for a Television budget. There is nothing worse than a "perfect CGI" film that has an awful story.

We have all seen them. Ignore them, and buy this. If you are still unsure, then wait 1 year until it goes down in price, and then buy it.

All I can say is that is that you need to watch at least 3 episodes before you properly judge. There is so mcuh in episode 1 that it clouds the mind and you can't really get your bearings.

But by episode 3 you understand the idea and then you can just run with it. Great stuff - keep them coming Report abuse.

Bought this for my husband when he'd finished watching Game of Thrones and he loves it, finding it equally as good. There appears to be considerable violence to me, but it fits well with the era and the story.

It is excellent value for money because of the length and number of episodes. As he's so pleased with this he's asked for the next installments for Christmas too.

See the full list. The inspiration behind this series is the Thracian Gladiator Spartacus, who led a slave uprising against the Roman Republic.

The Thracians had been persuaded by Claudius Glaber to serve as auxiliaries in the Roman legions in a campaign against the Getae, who had often plundered Thracian lands.

However after Glaber reneges on the deal and switches his attentions from the Getae to attack Mithridates in Asia Minor, the Thracians feel betrayed and mutiny.

Captured by Glaber, Spartacus is condemned to death as a Gladiator, whilst his wife Sura is condemned to slavery. Spartacus, however, proves to be a formidable gladiator, and defeats the four gladiators tasked with executing him.

He becomes a favorite of the crowd, leading Senator Albinius to commute his death sentence to a life of slavery. Spartacus is purchased by Batiatus for gladiator training, who promises to help him find Sura if he proves himself in training.

As the series develops, the story follows the betrayals and machinations Written by WellardRockard. For me the pilot was something of a mix between the graphic violence of it even includes somewhat similar battle sequences , the sex of , the idea of Gladiator and a bit of Rome.

I almost stopped watching it and I'm glad I didn't do it. People would see the first episode and dismiss it as "gore and sex" time-wasting perversity.

And they would be mistaken. The plot, filled with at first glance one-dimensional characters, is so varied, so deep, full of plot twists and unpredictable outcomes that you may find yourself glued to the screen.

The sex is still there, the sexy images as well muscular men and beautiful women , but the characters have gained so much depth and perspective, that you can't say someone is just white or black with two exceptions.

There are so many shades of gray in between, that most of the times even if you want to hate a character for plotting against the protagonist, you find yourself siding with him on another level.

The protagonist is not a saint, the "bad guys" show they can love and cherish, and you see the other side of mighty Rome, the one not shown in "Rome".

This show, even after the less than spectacular pilot, can be and for the moment is great and it's not the gore or sex that make it so.

In , Rome and even Gladiator, to which Spartacus: Blood and Sand is usually compared, the main characters are free men and women, people who act on their generally free will yes, even in Gladiator.

This show is different. Spartacus: Blood and Sand displays the Roman world through the eyes of the downtrodden, the helpless and the people without rights - the enslaved, THE underdogs, who eventually tried to defy the might of Rome, who lost and lost in an epic and tragic way and in their fall still achieved greatness and immortality.

Among the nudity, spilling blood and duel sequences, Spartacus: Blood and Sand shows the viewer why freedom is such a cherished thing, what happens when we lose it and why people throughout time have risen to regain it and died pursuing it or defending it.

Some people mock the characters for being "one-dimensional" and demand more complexity. Others have voiced their contempt of the less than accurate representation of "the complex social system of Rome".

Spartacus: Blood and Sand does not seek to represent the social system. For the people at the bottom of the ladder it was irrelevant whether Sulla was killing senators or Pompeus was gaining power.

As for the one-dimensional characters, let me pound the obvious and say this - when you have to kill a friend at the command of your master, or be killed as well, there's no possibility for inner struggle or soul searching.

You can't really disobey your master when humiliation, rape, torture and death lie just a whim away. It certainly is for now and gets better and better.

Unless the creators manage to screw up gigantically, which they have avoided so far, this child of Starz can become epic.
